Myobrace

Myobrace for Kids

What causes orthodontic problems?

From 6-10 years of age, children are getting their first permanent teeth. At this stage the teeth can become crowded and the jaws misaligned.

Habits such as mouth breathing, incorrect lip and tongue function (known as poor myofunctional habits) are the major causes of poor jaw development and tooth alignment. Research shows that these problems continue through to the permanent dentition, requiring complex orthodontic treatment. Braces and extractions do not resolve these problems and are best treated  as soon as they are evident.

These habits are easier to correct in the growing years. Once the causes are corrected natural growth and dental alignment can take place.

Is orthodontics with braces the only treatment option?

Since 1989, Myofunctional Research Co. (MRC) has developed appliances that provide a more effective option for the growing child with orthodontic problems. The appliances are designed not only to straighten teeth, but also to treat the underlying causes of crooked teeth by correcting bad oral habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrust and incorrect swallowing patterns.

Unlike traditional orthodontics, the primary goal of MCR’s approach to treatment is to achieve naturally straight teeth for life - often without the need for braces or retainers. Treating the causes of crooked teeth also improves general health and allows children to reach their maximum genetic potential.

How it works

MRC has pioneered the use of appliances to correct myofunctional habits in growing children and has proven success in orthodontic correction without braces. This treatment can also lead to better facial development in growing children. The key to this treatment is correcting the position and function of the tongue, obtaining correct nose breathing and retraining the oral muscles to function correctly.

How Myobrace works

Goals of Treatment

  • Lips together at all times except when speaking or eating
  • Breath through the nose, to assist the development of the upper and lower jaws, and to achieve the correct bite.
  • No lip activity when swallowing, which allows the front teeth to develop correctly.
  • Improved dental alignment.
  • Improved facial development.

For the Myobrace to work, you must correct your poor myofunctional habits.

Myobrace for Kids

Myobrace for Kids is a three-stage appliance system designed specifically to correct poor oral habits while treating upper and lower jaw development problems. Myobrace for Kids is most effective after a child's permanent front teeth have come through and before all the permanent teeth have erupted.

The appliance correct poor oral habits which are the cause of crooked teeth, while providing light forces to help expand the upper jaw and align the teeth into their correct natural position.

Treatment Considerations

Treatment time can differ depending on the biological adaptability of each patient. For a successful outcome the Myobrace appliance must be used daily for 1-2 hours plus overnight while sleeping.

Regular monitoring by your dentist or orthodontist is essential for successful treatment and to avoid unwanted treatment complications.

Myobrace for Teens

What causes orthodontic problems?

At 9-12 years of age, children are getting the remainder of their permanent teeth. Crowding and poor jaw alignment can become more severe as the adult face develops.

Habits such as mouth breathing, incorrect lip and tongue function (known as poor myofunctional habits) are the major causes of crooked teeth. These issues continue through to the permanent dentition – generally requiring complex orthodontic treatment. This is not the solution as braces and extractions do not resolve these problems and are best treated as soon as they are evident. It is still possible to simultaneously treat these myofunctional habits and align the newly erupting teeth so they can develop into their natural position.
