Sedation is available to almost all patients who
are fearful or anxious about dental visits. The sedative medication
is usually administered
through an intravenous (I.V.) line into a vein in the patients arm.
This is a very quick, and safe method of achieving sedation in most
patients and dental care can be delivered usually in a matter of
minutes after administration of the drug. Most patients are not awake
during the procedure and have no recollection of what was done. Patients
who are sedated must have an escort who can remain at the office
throughout the entire procedure and drive the patient home. Patients
must not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours prior to their
dental visit.
If a patient is afraid of the I.V. route nitrous
oxide (laughing gas) and/or oral sedation may be used. Both of these
means, although
not as effective as I.V. sedation, will achieve enough sedation to
perform simple restorative procedures.
Sedation, especially I.V. sedation, is a wonderful option for patients
who need dental care. Most insurance companies cover the procedure.
